Mirrors edge catalyst reviews full#
Running across the city at full speed while tackling challenges from the first-person perspective feels good. The traversal mechanics are excellent on the other hand. Move in, throw a couple of attacks, dodge, rinse, repeat. It doesn't help that the combat itself is monotonous and uninspiring. The animations during these fight scenes are totally uninspired and sometimes downright hilarious. The first problem that rears its head is a clipping issue that crops up when you knock enemies into various items, like a wall or table. You can also knock enemies into elements around you or smash them together to deal additional damage. The new combat mechanics give you light and heavy attacks with a "swift" move that lets you dodge attacks. The game still looks absolutely gorgeous when it wants to, but the inconsistency in the aesthetics drag it down a few notches. This makes it all the more disappointing when a low-res texture shows up or the completely uninspired character designs distract from the overall presentation. If we are to boil it down to a single word, we will call it "Clean". Pristine whites, overblown lighting effects, sharp lines across the architecture, there are just so many things about the visual presentation that make it appealing. Much like the original, the city of glass in the new Mirror's Edge is aesthetically beautiful. It feels completely underwhelming, which is disappointing.

Nevertheless, much like the original, what's here isn't going to win any awards but it is performed and acted competently enough to act as a motivation to go from point A to B. One would have guessed that Dice would use the original as a springboard instead of throwing in an entirely new plot. It's a somewhat confusing move because the story in the first game setup the world pretty nicely.

It just reboots the entire storyline with some recurring characters from the first. Catalyst has thrown much of the story from the first game out of the window.
